Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Ride was the feature new attraction for Alton Towers in 2006. The ride is based around the hit movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where a group of lucky winners are taken on a trip around the mysterious wonka factory by owner Willy Wonka. Through the story the naughty children misbehave and suffer the consequences however Charlie makes it through and ends up being given the factory.

The ride follows the same story as the film basing itself on a boat journey that the group go on, along the way visitors will go through scenes representing different parts of the story.

One big difference you will notice comparing the ride to the film, is that the little umpa lumpas that run the factory look nothing like those featured in the original film. Instead them seem to have turned into something looking like Lisa Simpson from the cartoon The Simpsons. Girls may also be disappointed to here that Jonny Depp is also not featured anywhere in the ride.

Following the boat trip riders then get to experience the glass elevator trip, first going all around the factory before then breaking through the roof and flying over the small town where the factory is located.

All in all it is a fun ride that I'm sure children will enjoy. For us older visitors that remember the classic original film and Toyland Tours, the ride that this one has replaced may come off feeling a little disappointed. The scenes are mainly just a visual representation of the film with some bits that seem cool but there's no need to ride 3 times to see everything like there was with Toyland Tours. Essentially the ride just lacks substance.

History

Prior to 2006 the building of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory housed a ride known as Toyland Tours. This ride featured the same circuit used by the boat trip part of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and had the main difference that all the scenes were of toys accompanied by amusing signs.
