The Gardens

One of the two reasons for Alton Towers becoming a tourist destination is its gardens (the other being the actual towers). In 1860 the gardens were open for the public to visit and following this various side shows were added. Over time the focus of the park moved from the gardens being the highlight onto its sideshows hence all the rides you see today.

The magic of the gardens however has not been lost. They still have a dedicated team caring for them all year round, and have a wide variety of plants and trees to be viewed.

For those that don't feel like walking around the gardens (and they are huge) the skyride from UG Land to Forbidden Valley goes over the valley they occupy giving you a birds eye view of the entire area. Alternatively those that don't want to walk the long trip from Forbidden Valley to UG Land or queue for the Monorail can take a short cut through the gardens, but be warned its easy to get lost!
